Though she originally hailed from Los Angeles, California, Kathryn A. (Gregory) Clarkin found her true home, community, and calling in Fall River. Following her relocation to the city, Kathryn built a life that touched generations of local families, leaving an enduring mark on its schools, civic institutions, and neighborhoods.
A Passion for Literacy and Education
Kathryn’s professional life was defined by an unwavering dedication to children and learning. After teaching in California and spending more than thirty years with the Raynham Public Schools, she returned to her roots in literacy as a reading specialist in the Fall River Public Schools. In her classroom, every child found encouragement and worth through what she lovingly termed a daily diet of “positive reinforcement.”
A Devoted Public Servant and Community Pillar
Beyond the classroom, Kathryn poured her boundless energy into the civic life of her adopted city. Her leadership and deep care for the community were evident in her service:
- Civic Leadership: She served as Chair of the Fall River Park Board, helping shape and steward the city’s green spaces.
- Cultural Stewardship: She dedicated many years as a Trustee of the Fall River Public Library, championing access to books and learning for all residents.
- Compassionate Care: Most recently, she brought her gentle spirit to Southcoast Hospital, where she volunteered as a newborn “cuddler.”
- Club & Community Ties: She was an active member of the Junior League of Fall River and the Massachusetts Teachers Association, and a familiar face at the Quequechan Club and the Fall River Country Club.
A Vibrant Spirit and Loving Grandmother
Away from her civic and educational work, Kathryn was a woman of remarkable vitality. Coming from an athletic family, she remained fiercely competitive—whether playing golf, tennis, or pickleball at the local YMCA and Council on Aging, or engaging in a sharp game of Mahjong. Above all, her world centered on her children, Kerry and James, and her five grandchildren, whom she taught by quiet example how to live with kindness, tolerance, and love.
Kathryn Clarkin will be remembered by her students, neighbors, and wide circle of friends as a true lady without pretensions—a warm presence whose grace, simplicity, and love enriched Fall River for decades.
