If you are going to pull off an elaborate local caffeine scam, maybe don’t leave your license plate number floating in the breeze for the security cameras to admire.
A local spot is putting the spotlight on a smooth-talking grifter who decided that honesty is totally overrated when a free specialty coffee is on the line. According to a post shared by The Moose Cafe, a customer strolled in with a theatrical tale of woe: her elderly mother had supposedly just dropped her precious specialty coffee out in the parking lot, and could the kind folks please, please replace it?
Leaning into the spirit of community charity (and perhaps ignoring the register guidelines for a split second), the staff decided to have a little faith in humanity. They whipped up a brand-new specialty drink free of charge to mend a grieving senior’s broken heart.
The reward for their kindness? As soon as the cup was handed over, the suspect didn’t linger to admire the latte art. Instead, staff watched her scurry out to her car all by her lonesome, leap behind the wheel, and peel out of the parking lot like she was fleeing a bank heist.
A quick post-dash check of the register revealed the harsh truth: no record of any such sale, and none of the baristas had any clue who the original customer was.
Rather than letting the frustration slide, The Moose Cafe decided to turn the incident into a public community service announcement—complete with the alleged culprit’s Massachusetts license plate (8FF566) and a friendly invitation to return:
“TODAYS LOSER……there’s still hope for you, maybe, start by coming back and paying what’s due, maybe, that would snowball into you making more good decisions, maybe, that could change your life for the better???”
Locals in the comments were quick to chime in, with one joking, “Did she steal or did you get finessed?” while another pointed out the obvious flaw in the caper: honesty goes a lot further, and a simple dose of transparency might have even earned her a free cup the honest way.
As for the license plate caught on camera? Let’s just say this is one specialty coffee order that is going to cost way more than five bucks to clear up. Unfortunately this is the only photo available.
