The Massachusetts Lottery is preparing to enter the digital era with the launch of its expanded iLottery platform later this summer, marking one of the biggest changes in the lottery’s history. While officials have not announced an exact launch date, regulators have given Executive Director Mark William Bracken the authority to determine the rollout schedule, game pricing, prize structures, and other operational details ahead of the platform’s debut.

That flexibility is expected to allow the lottery to introduce its online offerings gradually, test the platform, and refine the player experience as new games become available.

A Major Digital Expansion

For decades, the Massachusetts Lottery has relied primarily on ticket sales through convenience stores, gas stations, and licensed lottery retailers across the state. The new iLottery platform represents a significant modernization effort designed to meet changing consumer preferences and compete with the growing popularity of online gambling.

Mass Lottery Online will allow eligible players to purchase and play lottery games on mobile devices, tablets, desktops, or through the official Mass Lottery app. Players must be at least 21 years old and physically located within Massachusetts to deposit funds, purchase tickets, and play.

The platform will feature:

  • New eInstant games, including titles with progressive jackpots.
  • Online access to popular draw games such as Powerball, Mega Millions, Mass Cash, and others.
  • Exclusive digital games, including Mass 3 and Mass 4 with Wicked Bonus.
  • A single player account for managing games, deposits, withdrawals, favorite titles, and account activity.

Lottery officials say the digital platform is intended to make lottery products more accessible, particularly for younger and mobile-first consumers, while offering a secure and convenient way to play.

Strong Revenue Expectations

The online expansion is also expected to provide a meaningful financial boost for the state. According to reports, the Massachusetts Lottery projects approximately $70 million in net profit during the first year of iLottery operations.

The lottery has long been one of the state’s most successful revenue generators. During fiscal year 2025, the Massachusetts State Lottery generated $5.963 billion in total revenue, producing $1.067 billion in net profit for local aid and other state-supported programs.

Officials expect the digital platform to help sustain that success as consumer habits continue shifting toward online entertainment.

Responsible Gaming Remains a Focus

The expansion is also expected to draw scrutiny from critics who have raised concerns about increased access to gambling through digital platforms. As Massachusetts continues to grow its legal gaming industry—which already includes sports betting and casino gambling—responsible gaming advocates are likely to closely monitor the rollout of online lottery products.

State officials have emphasized that the platform will include account-based play and age and location verification requirements, with access restricted to adults 21 and older who are physically present in Massachusetts.

With its iLottery launch approaching, Massachusetts is joining a growing number of states embracing digital lottery sales in an effort to modernize operations, attract new players, and generate additional revenue while balancing consumer protections and responsible gaming measures.
