Former St. Michael Principal Ryan Klein Breaks Silence, Disputes Diocese’s Account of His Departure

Following a July 23 letter from Father Fred Babiczuk and Diocese of Fall River Superintendent Daniel Roy announcing that Ryan Klein had “concluded his service” as principal of St. Michael School, Klein issued a public statement disputing the narrative surrounding his departure.

Klein said he was called to the Diocesan Office on June 29 believing he would be discussing the renewal of his contract for the 2026–2027 school year. Instead, he said he was informed that his contract would not be renewed despite what he described as the school’s success during his tenure. He emphasized that he never engaged in any inappropriate or illegal conduct and said he has requested copies of his performance evaluations from the Diocese through his attorney but has not received them.

Klein also challenged the Diocese’s public statement, arguing that while it cited respect for his family’s privacy, its vague wording has fueled speculation and created a false impression that he was removed because of misconduct. He noted that he was removed from his position on June 30, nearly a month before the Diocese publicly announced his departure on July 23. He further stated that negotiations over an employment separation agreement broke down because he refused to sign a document that would have allowed the Diocese and parish to unilaterally draft a public explanation of his departure that he believes misrepresented the circumstances.

Despite his criticism of how the matter was handled, Klein expressed deep affection for St. Michael School, its students, staff, and families, saying his family had devoted their hearts to the school. He called the process “wrongful” and “shameful” and said he believes the uncertainty surrounding his departure ultimately harms the school community. He concluded by saying he will continue praying for the school’s success.

The Diocese’s letter to parents thanked Klein for his service but stated that, in accordance with personnel policies and respect for his family’s privacy, it could not provide additional details. The Diocese said it remains committed to supporting students, faculty, and families while it begins the search for new school leadership.

Support for Klein has also emerged within the St. Michael community. Community member Carl Garcia praised Klein’s leadership, saying he inspired students academically and spiritually and encouraged the community to stand behind him, adding that “we as the community should have the last word.”

This summary reflects the competing public statements and opinions that have been made. The Diocese has not publicly responded to Klein’s specific allegations regarding the circumstances of his departure or the separation agreement negotiations.
