Re-shared from a wonderful Facebook posting I saw today, Katelyn Cordeiro posted the following: “Yesterday, while walking my dog, I noticed a young boy going door to door in the neighborhood, asking if anyone needed their weeds pulled or their lawn mowed. He was simply trying to earn a little money for himself—and hopefully, someday, enough to buy a dirt bike.” Meet Emitt, our hero for the day!

Door after door, he heard the same words:

“No, thank you.”

I asked him what he was doing, and he explained that he was trying to earn some money. I wished him good luck and watched as he continued down the street, determined not to give up despite all the rejection.

After seeing him knock on a few more doors, I called him back and asked if he wanted to take a look at my yard.

His face immediately lit up.

We walked back to the house, he looked around and confidently said, “I’ll do it now!”

I jokingly asked if he was going to charge me an arm and a leg.

His answer?

“Max $15.”

The only problem was that it was already 7:40 PM, and he had an 8:00 PM curfew. We told him to come back the next day and that we would happily pay him then.

But he insisted on doing the job—and he wouldn’t accept a penny until the work was completely finished.

He told us he’d be back at 3:00 PM the next day.

And sure enough, he showed up.

A little later than planned, arriving around 4:15 PM, he immediately apologized for being late. Then he grabbed the weed whacker and lawn mower and got straight to work.

When the machines ran out of power, he knew exactly what to do—changing the battery, getting everything charged, and getting right back to work.

And did I mention he’s only 9 years old?

He worked incredibly hard and did an amazing job. The yard was definitely more work than he probably expected, but he was determined to finish what he started.

He was polite. He was hardworking. He was respectful.

And he was genuinely appreciative.

After watching him work so hard, we invited him to have a burger with us. He happily joined us, and somehow, that simple meal made the entire experience even more special.

Before he left, we told him to count the money we gave him to make sure everything was correct.

He counted it—and immediately insisted that we had given him too much.

He even tried to give some of it back.

We told him to keep it.

He thanked us over and over again before heading home.

That little interaction stayed with us.

Because sometimes, it isn’t a big, dramatic gesture that restores your faith in people. Sometimes, it’s a 9-year-old kid with a weed whacker, a strong work ethic, and a dream of one day buying a dirt bike.

His parents should be incredibly proud—not only of the work ethic they’ve instilled in him, but of the kind, respectful, honest young man he is becoming.

Kids like this remind us that hard work, honesty, determination, and kindness are still being taught—and still making a difference. ❤️

A beautiful reminder that sometimes the simplest moments can leave the biggest impression. Great job Emitt, we are PROUD of your work ethic!

And a special thank-you to Brianna Martins, this young man’s mom, for granting us permission to share his story. ❤️
