For more than 80 years, USS Massachusetts—”Big Mamie”—has stood as a powerful symbol of courage, sacrifice, and freedom. Today, she serves as a living memorial to the Americans who answered their nation’s call during World War II and to the generations of veterans who have defended our country ever since.

Every year, thousands of veterans, families, students, Scouts, and visitors from around the world walk her decks, touch history, and gain a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made to preserve our freedom. Preserving Big Mamie means preserving these stories—and ensuring they continue to inspire future generations.

In the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, Battleship Cove invested $1.5 million to restore and repaint the ship’s freeboard and fantail, protecting one of America’s most treasured historic warships. But our work is not finished.

Today, Big Mamie’s superstructure urgently needs restoration. Years of exposure to the harsh marine environment have taken their toll, and without continued preservation, this proud combat veteran will continue to deteriorate. Restoring the superstructure is essential to protecting the ship and returning her to the appearance worthy of her remarkable service.

As a nonprofit museum, Battleship Cove depends on the generosity of supporters who believe our nation’s history should be preserved—not only in books, but in places where people can experience it firsthand. While our dedicated volunteers donate countless hours of labor, projects of this magnitude can only be completed through charitable contributions.

Your gift will make a lasting difference.

Every donation to this campaign is restricted exclusively to the restoration and repainting of Big Mamie’s superstructure. Every dollar brings us one step closer to preserving this National Historic Landmark for veterans, their families, and future generations.

By supporting this project, you are doing more than restoring steel and paint. You are helping preserve the legacy of those who served, fought, and sacrificed for our freedom. You are ensuring that future generations can stand where they stood, hear their stories, and understand the price of liberty.

Please make your gift today and help keep Big Mamie standing proudly for generations to come.

If you would like to donate by check, please make it payable to USS Massachusetts Memorial Committee, Inc. and write “Superstructure” in the memo line.

Mail your contribution to:

Since 1965, Battleship Cove has preserved the military heritage of New England and the United States as home to five National Historic Landmarks and officially recognized veterans memorials. Your support ensures these extraordinary ships, the stories they carry, and the sacrifices they represent will never be forgotten.

Help restore Big Mamie. Help preserve history. Help honor those who served.
