Rhode Island might be the smallest state, but it has recently become home to some truly larger-than-life residents. Across the state’s parks, bike paths, and dense management areas, giant wooden sculptures have turned everyday walks into whimsical scavenger hunts.

Crafted by world-renowned environmental recycle artist Thomas Dambo, these towering installations are part of a global project designed to get people outside, spark imagination, and emphasize the importance of sustainability by repurposing scrap wood into masterpieces.

If you are planning a weekend road trip or a spontaneous day of exploring the Ocean State, here is your ultimate guide to finding all five of Rhode Island’s magical trolls.

Meet the Trolls: Where to Find Them

Though spread across different landscapes—from coastal views to deep woodlands—all five sculptures are free to the public and make for an unforgettable adventure.

1. Mrs. Skipper (East Providence)

  • Location: Kettle Point Park / East Bay Bike Path
  • The Vibe: Greeting visitors near the water with a massive lifeboat hoisted overhead, Mrs. Skipper nods to Rhode Island’s rich maritime identity.
  • Accessibility: Highly accessible. Because she sits right along the East Bay Bike Path, she is a favorite stop for bicyclists, walkers, and anyone looking for stunning views of Narragansett Bay.

2. Erik Rock & Greta Granite (Charlestown)

  • Location: Ninigret Park
  • The Vibe: Ninigret Park is a jackpot for troll hunters because it hosts two sculptures. Erik Rock stands watch near the park’s ponds, while Greta Granite is tucked a short walk away into the surrounding woods.
  • Accessibility: Very family-friendly with plenty of open space, walking paths, and recreational areas nearby. (Note: Keep an eye out for tree roots along the path leading deeper into Greta’s wooded nook).

3. Young Boulder (Exeter / Richmond)

  • Location: Arcadia Management Area
  • The Vibe: True to his name, Young Boulder is hidden deep within Rhode Island’s sprawling state management forest, giving seekers the authentic feel of stumbling upon a secret forest guardian.
  • Accessibility: A short, beautiful walk from the parking areas (such as near the pavilion or Browning Mill Pond). Tip: Because Arcadia is an active multi-use and hunting area, it’s always smart to check local seasonal guidelines and wear bright colors if you’re visiting during hunting months.

4. Iver Mudslider (North Kingstown)

  • Location: Ryan Park
  • The Vibe: Tucked away on a little hill surrounded by trees, Iver’s earthy texture blends seamlessly into the tranquil landscape of Ryan Park.
  • Accessibility: Ryan Park offers peaceful forest trails, ponds, and manageable walking paths, though parking can fill up quickly on busy weekends.

Tips for a Successful Troll Hunt

  • Spread It Out or Knock It Out Fast: While you can drive across the state to hit all four locations in a single action-packed day, many visitors prefer breaking it up over a weekend to enjoy local food stops, nearby shops (like the quirky Fantastic Umbrella Factory in Charlestown), and coastal dining.
  • Leave No Trace: Dambo’s trolls are meant to be interacted with visually, photographed, and appreciated, but they are fragile art pieces built from natural materials. Give them space, respect the surrounding parks, and leave no trash behind.
  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: While Mrs. Skipper is right on a paved path, trolls like Young Boulder and Greta Granite require short hikes over dirt paths, gravel, and exposed tree roots.

Whether you’re a local looking to rediscover your home state or a visitor from out of town, tracking down Thomas Dambo’s wooden giants is one of the most rewarding and magical ways to experience Rhode Island. Happy hunting!
