Nestled in the heart of downtown New Bedford at 169 William Street stands a remarkable pillar of the local arts scene: Gallery X. Housed inside the magnificent and historic 1855 First Universalist Church building, this vibrant cooperative contemporary art gallery and performance space has spent decades transforming sacred architecture into a sanctuary for creative expression.
A Legacy of Community and Culture
Founded in 1990—initially starting out on Spring Street—Gallery X eventually made its monumental move to the former First Universalist Church in 1995. This brilliant adaptive reuse preserved a stunning piece of local history while establishing a permanent home for artists and art lovers alike. Today, the cooperative operates as a non-profit organization driven by a passionate community of visual, performing, and literary artist members and volunteers.

The building itself is a masterpiece of multi-use community space, thoughtfully divided to accommodate a wide variety of artistic mediums:

- Amenities & Accessibility: True to its community-first mission, the facility features full downstairs kitchen amenities, comprehensive handicap accessibility (including an access ramp, restroom, and wheelchair lift), and a delightful gift shop showcasing unique works by local artists.
