The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for much of southern New England, with dangerously high temperatures and humidity expected from Wednesday morning through Friday evening.

Forecasters say heat index values could reach as high as 110 degrees, creating potentially dangerous conditions across the region.

The watch covers:

  • Northern Connecticut
  • Central, eastern, northeastern, southeastern, and western Massachusetts
  • Northern and southern Rhode Island

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will make it feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature. These conditions can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions, and those working or exercising outdoors.

The National Weather Service recommends taking the following precautions:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
  • Limit time outdoors, especially during the hottest part of the afternoon.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and anyone who may be vulnerable to the heat.

Officials also remind residents never to leave children or pets unattended inside a vehicle, even for a short time. Temperatures inside a parked car can become deadly within minutes.

The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the forecast and may upgrade the watch to an Extreme Heat Warning if confidence increases that dangerous conditions will occur.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring local forecasts and following any additional advisories issued over the coming days.
