At approximately 2:54 p.m. Thursday afternoon, the Somerset Police Department dispatch center received several 9-1-1 calls reporting a motor vehicle crash involving a car and a school bus on Brayton Point Road, between Wilbur Avenue and Butler Street.
Upon arrival, officers determined that there were minor injuries as a result of the crash. No students on the school bus were injured.
The investigation determined that the car crossed out of its lane of travel before striking the school bus head-on. The driver told officers that they had fallen asleep while driving. At this time, there are no indications that intoxication or substance use played a role in the crash.
The driver was transported to a local hospital by Somerset Rescue.
Following the crash, some students were picked up by their families at the scene. The remaining students were transported back to the Middle School on another school bus at the direction of Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Schoonover, who was also at the scene.
Both the school bus and the car were towed from the scene by Gaskells Towing.
The Somerset Police Department reminds motorists to remain alert while driving and never operate a vehicle when fatigued.
