Southern New England remains under a Weather Alert as dangerous heat and humidity continue through Wednesday.

A strengthening ridge of high pressure—commonly known as a heat dome—is expanding across the Northeast while a persistent southwest wind funnels a surge of hot, humid air into the region. Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the mid to upper 90s away from the immediate coastline, with dew points climbing into the upper 60s and lower 70s.

The combination of heat and humidity will send heat index values into the mid-90s to near 100 degrees, making it feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature.

Southwest winds will also become gusty this afternoon, with gusts of 25 to 30 mph. While the breeze will do little to cool temperatures, it should help prevent humidity levels from becoming quite as oppressive as they were during the early July heat wave.

The dangerous conditions have prompted the National Weather Service to issue Heat Advisories for all of Rhode Island, much of Connecticut, and portions of Massachusetts. The advisories are in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Wednesday.

With heat index values nearing 100 degrees, the risk of heat-related illnesses increases, particularly for those spending extended periods outdoors. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon.
