FALMOUTH, Mass. — A peaceful evening on Jenkins Pond turned tragic Monday when an 18-year-old Connecticut man fell from a paddleboard, disappeared beneath the water and later died, authorities said.
Emergency crews rushed to the Falmouth pond shortly before 6 p.m. after a 911 caller reported that the young man had gone underwater and could not be found. The Falmouth Police Department said the victim had fallen from his paddleboard.
Falmouth Fire and Rescue crews quickly launched a boat and pulled the victim from the water. First responders immediately began life-saving efforts before rushing him to Falmouth Hospital.
Despite those efforts, the man was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The victim was identified by the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office as an 18-year-old from Vernon, Connecticut. His name had not been released as of midday Tuesday.
Falmouth Marine and Environmental Services and the Massachusetts State Environmental Police also responded to the scene.
Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office are leading the investigation. The Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is expected to conduct an autopsy as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
The investigation remains ongoing.
