71 YEARS LATER: REMEMBERING PATROLMAN JAMES G. ENGLAND
Today, the New Bedford Police Department remembers one of our own, Patrolman James G. England, who made the ultimate sacrifice 71 years ago today.
Patrolman England joined the NBPD in 1947 and served as a uniform patrol officer. On September 14, 1955, at the age of 40, he was shot and killed with his own service weapon while struggling with a mentally disturbed individual at a medical facility in the city.
In the years that followed, a memorial was dedicated in his honor in front of Police Headquarters on Rockdale Avenue. That memorial still stands today, serving as a lasting reminder of Patrolman England, his service, and the sacrifice he made for the City of New Bedford.
Seventy-one years later, his name has not been forgotten.
The New Bedford Police Department will always remember Patrolman James G. England and honor his dedication, service, and ultimate sacrifice.
Rest in peace, Patrolman England. We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
