TAUNTON, MA — A 25-year-old New Bedford woman has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a shooting at a Taunton house party that left one man dead and seven other people injured.
The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday that Sienna Barboza, 25, of New Bedford, was arrested in connection with the shooting. She has been charged with one count of murder and seven counts of armed assault with intent to murder.
The shooting occurred shortly after midnight Sunday, September 6, at a home at 261 Weir Street in Taunton. According to authorities, Taunton Police received multiple 911 calls at approximately 12:35 a.m. reporting shots fired and multiple people injured in the area of Weir and Sumner streets.
When officers arrived, investigators determined that a large gathering had been taking place at the Weir Street property. Several people were still at the scene, while some of those injured reportedly sought medical treatment on their own. Investigators ultimately identified eight shooting victims, all of whom were in their early 20s.
Authorities identified one of the victims as 22-year-old Zirovick Depina of Brockton, who was later pronounced dead. Of the seven surviving victims, one was previously reported to be in serious but stable condition. The remaining victims suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening. Authorities did not provide updated information on their conditions when announcing Barboza’s arrest Wednesday.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The shooting remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, along with the Taunton Police Department. Authorities have not publicly released information about a possible motive or the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Following the shooting, Taunton Mayor Shaunna O’Connell said authorities believed the incident was isolated and there was no known ongoing threat to the broader community. Barboza is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday morning in Taunton District Court.
As of the initial announcement of her arrest, it was not immediately clear whether Barboza was represented by an attorney. The charges against Barboza are allegations. She is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
