A growing network of Flock Safety cameras is scanning license plates across the country — and now, drivers have a way to find out whether their vehicle appears in the system’s search records.
The website Have I Been Flocked? has compiled public records containing nearly 4.7 million license plates and 241 million Flock searches. Drivers can enter their license plate information to check whether it appears in the database.
A match does not mean the driver was under investigation. It simply indicates that the license plate was searched through the Flock system.
The tool comes as Flock Safety faces growing scrutiny over privacy and surveillance concerns, with protests breaking out in communities across the country.
Police departments say the cameras can help solve crimes, locate missing people and identify vehicles connected to investigations.
But civil liberties advocates have raised concerns about how the technology enables police to collect and search information about where people drive, even when those drivers are not suspected of committing a crime.
