The community is mourning the tragic loss of 19-year-old Nicholas Bennett, who was fatally stabbed during an altercation on Anthony Street in Coventry, Rhode Island.
According to Coventry police, officers responded to a report of a stabbing at 12 Anthony St. at approximately 10:15 p.m. Monday. While law enforcement, the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, and the state medical examiner’s office continue to investigate the active case, grieving family members have stepped forward to share the heartbreaking reality of who Nick was and how he lived his final moments.
Remembered as a Hero and a Musician
Nick’s loved ones describe him as a quiet, kindhearted, and profoundly genuine young man with an old soul. Family members believe he was fatally wounded while stepping into harm’s way to protect a friend.
“That is Nick. Through and through,” said his sister-in-law, Amber Bennett, when asked if she was surprised he would risk his safety for someone else. His brother, Jayson Gagnon, echoed the sentiment, describing the family as completely broken by the sudden tragedy.
Beyond his bravery, Nick was an extraordinarily talented self-taught musician. Though primarily a skilled guitarist who spent hours “shredding,” his family noted that he could pick up and play nearly any instrument, including the piano, drums, and trumpet. He carried big ambitions of making it in the music industry the “old-fashioned way.”
Community Support and Fundraiser
As Nick’s family navigates this unimaginable loss, community members and loved ones have rallied around them to help ease the unexpected financial burdens of funeral costs and lost wages.
A support page has been established to assist the Bennett family during this difficult time. Those wishing to contribute financially or share words of condolence can access the family fundraiser directly through SupportNow
Police ask anyone with relevant information regarding the incident to contact the Coventry Police Department as the investigation continues.
