With the election separated by less than a percentage point, candidates faced a 3 p.m. Thursday deadline to submit petitions for a district-wide recount, putting renewed attention on the accuracy of the final results.
Steve Medeiros addressed the recount Thursday afternoon in a social media post, saying the process should be viewed primarily as an effort to ensure the integrity of the election rather than as a political contest.
“The focus cannot be on political games,” Medeiros wrote. “It must be on election integrity.”
Medeiros said the narrow margin makes it important that every vote be accurately counted, regardless of whether the recount ultimately changes the outcome.
“Whether the final outcome changes or remains the same, a margin this close separated by just a fraction of a percent demands complete accuracy,” he wrote.
Candidates had until 3 p.m. Thursday to submit petitions requesting a district-wide recount. The process could determine whether the reported results remain unchanged or whether the final margin shifts following a review of the ballots.
Medeiros’ comments framed the recount as a matter of ensuring confidence in the final tally, emphasizing accuracy over the political implications of the result.
