The UMass Dartmouth Police Department is mourning the loss of retired Police Officer Steven Ralph Mello, a dedicated public servant whose more than three decades of service left a lasting mark on the university community.
For Steve, serving UMass Dartmouth was more than a career—it was a commitment to the people and community he proudly protected. He began his career at the university as an Institutional Security Officer before graduating from the MPTC Canton Regional Police Academy and becoming a Police Officer. Over the course of more than 30 years, he became a familiar and trusted presence on campus, devoted to making the university safer and stronger.
Steve was a passionate advocate for crime prevention, community outreach, and public safety. His efforts helped shape initiatives that continue to benefit the campus today, reflecting his belief that effective policing was built not only on protection, but also on relationships, trust, and genuine connection with the people he served.
But Steve’s greatest legacy cannot be measured by years of service or professional accomplishments.
He was a devoted husband, loving father, trusted colleague, mentor, and friend. He had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcome, and his humor and generosity could brighten even the most difficult day. Whether working alongside fellow officers, helping members of the university community, or simply sharing a conversation with a friend, Steve gave people his time, his attention, and his kindness.
Those who knew Steve will remember far more than the uniform. They will remember the person behind it—a man who cared deeply about others and who brought compassion, warmth, and humor to everything he did.
The UMass Dartmouth Police Department extends its deepest condolences to Steve’s wife, Cyndie, his daughter, Sam, and his family, friends, former colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched throughout his remarkable life of service.
Steve dedicated more than 30 years to UMass Dartmouth. In doing so, he became part of the fabric of the university itself.
His legacy of service, friendship, mentorship, and compassion will continue to live on in the UMass Dartmouth Police Department and throughout the university community he served so faithfully.
