MATTAPOISETT — A late-night collision on Route 195 westbound sent a fully loaded dump truck careening into the woods early Thursday morning, prompting a complex rescue operation and major traffic delays.
According to the Mattapoisett Fire Department, emergency crews were dispatched to the scene near mile marker 30.4 at approximately 1:53 a.m. Responding personnel received urgent reports while en route that at least one occupant was trapped inside the wreckage and required immediate extrication.
Upon arrival, firefighters deployed heavy-duty hydraulic rescue tools to cut into the severely damaged vehicle. Crews successfully freed the patient, who was subsequently cared for and transported from the scene by Mattapoisett Police and EMS.
The vehicle involved was a commercial dump truck carrying a full load of asphalt that veered off the roadway and entered the tree line.
As of late morning, units including Chief 1, Engine 3, and Rescue 1 remained active at the scene. Hazmat and mitigation efforts are underway to address a fuel spill and secure additional environmental hazards, while heavy-duty wreckers work on the difficult task of removing the truck from the wooded area.
Traffic Advisories and Impact
Motorists traveling through the region should anticipate significant delays. Route 195 westbound between the Mattapoisett and Fairhaven exits has been impacted as emergency and recovery crews continue their work.
Local public safety officials are urging drivers to exercise caution, allow extra travel time, and seek alternate routes until the scene is fully cleared. Authorities also ask the public to give responding personnel ample workspace to operate safely.
The Mattapoisett Fire Department expressed gratitude to all mutual-aid partners and responding agencies for their coordinated efforts during the challenging emergency response.
