In a powerful display of solidarity and community partnership, civilian members of the New Bedford Police Department (NBPD) and personnel from the Third District Court recently united to wear purple. The initiative serves as a visual reminder that supporting survivors and raising awareness remains a year-round commitment, with October shining a vital spotlight on the issue.

The Significance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Observed annually throughout October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from the “Day of Unity” held in October 1987 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV). The movement aims to achieve several critical goals:

  • Honoring Survivors: Recognizing the incredible strength and resilience of those who have survived abusive relationships.
  • Remembering Victims: Mourning those who have lost their lives to domestic violence and supporting the families left behind.
  • Educating the Public: Diselling myths surrounding domestic violence, highlighting the signs of abuse, and informing communities about available resources.
  • Fostering Collaboration: Bringing law enforcement, judicial systems, advocacy groups, and community members together to create a safer environment for everyone.

The Power of Community Collaboration

As highlighted by local officials, community collaboration plays an indispensable role in combating domestic violence. Abusive relationships often thrive in isolation, with perpetrators utilizing control, fear, and shame to make victims feel entirely alone.

When local agencies—such as police departments and court systems—stand visibly alongside advocacy networks, it sends a clear and reassuring message to anyone experiencing abuse: You are not alone, and help is available.

Resources and Support

Domestic violence affects individuals of all backgrounds, regardless of age, race, gender, economic status, or religion. If you or someone you know is impacted by domestic violence, support is available 24/7:

  • National Domestic Violence Hotline: Call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or text “START” to 88788 for confidential, free support.
  • Local Resources: Reach out to local police departments, district court victim-witness advocates, or regional domestic violence shelters and advocacy programs for immediate assistance.
