NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — A 32-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty following an investigation sparked by a disturbing surveillance video that police say captured her physically assaulting an eight-month-old dog.
According to the City of New Bedford Police Department, officers assisted Animal Control on Thursday, October 8, responding to an apartment on Barker’s Lane. The investigation was initiated after authorities reviewed surveillance footage—which law enforcement warned contains graphic and upsetting material—showing a woman repeatedly striking and abusing the small dog.
The victim, an eight-month-old dog named Ace, was subsequently located at a separate residence and taken into protective custody by Animal Control. Authorities noted that Ace suffered visible injuries, including bruising to his head and body and a swollen eye socket.
Animal Control officers transported Ace to an animal hospital on Thursday evening for an emergency examination and medical treatment. Following his hospital visit, the suspect, identified as Female Mojica, surrendered the dog to authorities, and Ace was transferred to the Forever Paws Animal Shelter for ongoing care.
Police have expressed gratitude to Animal Control officers and community members who came forward with critical tips that helped locate Ace and ensure his safety.
Authorities emphasize that animal cruelty is a severe offense. Anyone who witnesses or suspects animal abuse is urged to contact the New Bedford Police Department at (508) 991-6300 or Animal Control at (508) 991-6366.
