A 21-year-old man died early Saturday morning after falling into a quarry in Westford, Massachusetts, police said.
Westford police and fire crews responded to Merrill’s Quarry, just off Tyngsboro Road, after a caller reported seeing a man fall into the water. The caller later said they could no longer see him.
Police found the man face down in the water. He was taken to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the victim died from injuries sustained in the fall and from being in the water for an extended period.
Mark and Kathy Bruno, who live near the quarry, said they have repeatedly encountered young people seeking help for injuries sustained while swimming there.
“It is not a safe place, and we have been saying it for years and years and years,” Kathy Bruno said. “It would be great if the town of Westford finally acted and did something.”
“If you can minimize the number of kids that go up there, you’re going to minimize the number of people who get hurt and you’re going to minimize the death,” Mark Bruno said. “Young children have lost their lives because it doesn’t seem like anyone wants to take the next step to figure out how do we solve this problem, but I think it’s solvable.”
The victim’s identity has not been released.
The incident comes just weeks after a Boston teenager drowned at a quarry in Milford.
