The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a fisherman from the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday afternoon after he fell overboard from the fishing vessel WESTERN EDGE off the coast of Southeastern New England.
U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received the report at 12:52 p.m. local time that a crew member had gone overboard. The Coast Guard immediately launched a coordinated search, issuing an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and deploying a response that included a rescue boat from U.S. Coast Guard Station Provincetown, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, and the Coast Guard Cutter Melvin Bell, which was diverted from patrol to assist.
At 2:47 p.m., the crew of the fishing vessel SEAL JR reported spotting the missing fisherman in the water. Coast Guard helicopter 6061 quickly arrived on scene, and its rescue swimmer entered the ocean to reach the survivor. The crew member was successfully hoisted aboard the helicopter and rescued.
The fisherman was reported to be suffering from hypothermia and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
