The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is advising motorists to expect potential traffic disruptions on the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge (Route 6) as extreme heat is forecast across the region from Wednesday, July 1, through Tuesday, July 7.

According to MassDOT, the swing bridge may experience operational issues during periods of high temperatures, potentially preventing it from closing to vehicular traffic after opening for marine vessels. If this occurs, the bridge could remain in the open position until conditions allow it to safely return to service.

Motorists traveling through the area should be prepared for possible Route 6 closures and extended delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes when necessary. MassDOT stated that additional advisories will be issued if temporary bridge closures become necessary.

The operational issues are caused by extreme heat affecting the bridge’s movable span. During periods of high temperatures, the upper sections of the span absorb significant solar heat and expand while the lower portions remain cooler due to contact with the river. This temperature difference can cause the bridge to slightly warp, preventing the hydraulic locking system from securing the bridge for vehicle traffic.

MassDOT continues to monitor conditions and urges travelers to plan ahead and allow extra travel time throughout the anticipated heat event.

This version is formatted in a traditional news/agency press release style while keeping the technical explanation understandable for the general public.

Here is a tranquil shot of the bridge in question from Singing with Light Photography. Lets hope it stays functional.
