The Cinderella Story Continues for Cape Verde

If you’re new to the World Cup, Cape Verde’s run is one of those stories that explains why people fall in love with the tournament. As someone how doesn’t really follow the sport this years event has been inspiring and entertaining. The local communities in the South Coast are bubbling over with joy as the underdog nation of Cape Verde has defied all expectations.

Cape Verde is a tiny island nation off the west coast of Africa with a population of about 530,000 people—smaller than many cities around the world. Before the tournament, almost nobody expected them to make a deep run. Yet they not only qualified for the knockout stage, they earned a matchup against Lionel Messi and defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32.

Part of what makes their success so remarkable is who is on the team.

Their goalkeeper, Vozinha, is 40 years old and became one of the tournament’s breakout stars after an incredible performance that helped stop Spain. His journey is especially unlikely: at 29, he was still playing in the amateur league on São Vicente, one of Cape Verde’s islands. Now he’s preparing to face Messi, the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer. It’s the kind of matchup that feels almost impossible until the World Cup makes it real.

The rest of the squad is full of similarly unconventional stories. Pico Lopes, a defender who plays for Ireland’s Shamrock Rovers, was reportedly recruited to the national team after being discovered through LinkedIn—hardly the route most fans imagine for an international soccer player. Their captain, Ryan Mendes, is 36 and plays in Turkey’s second division rather than one of Europe’s glamorous leagues, yet he’s leading his country onto the biggest stage in the sport.

For someone new to World Cup soccer, this is why the tournament is special. It’s not just about powerhouse nations like Argentina, Brazil, or France. Every four years, smaller countries get a chance to compete against the world’s best, and sometimes they produce unforgettable Cinderella stories. Cape Verde doesn’t have the financial resources, player pool, or soccer tradition of the giants, but through disciplined defending, teamwork, and resilience, they’ve earned the right to stand across from Messi and Argentina.

Whether they pull off another upset or not, Cape Verde has already reminded fans that in the World Cup, extraordinary stories can come from the smallest places. Watching a goalkeeper who was playing local island soccer in his late twenties face arguably the greatest player in history, or seeing a defender found through LinkedIn line up against stars like Julián Álvarez, captures the tournament at its best: proof that, as Cape Verde’s players have said throughout their run, nothing is impossible.
