A 91-year-old woman was airlifted to a Boston hospital Wednesday morning after crashing her minivan aboard a Martha’s Vineyard ferry, according to Massachusetts State Police.
Authorities said the woman drove her minivan onto the M/V Island Home at a high rate of speed, traveling the length of the vehicle deck before crashing into the ferry’s loading doors.
She was flown by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital. Her condition has not been released. No other injuries were reported. The crash disrupted ferry operations for about two hours.
The Steamship Authority said the U.S. Coast Guard has cleared the M/V Island Home to return to Woods Hole, where maintenance crews will inspect the vessel for damage.
In the meantime, the M/V Sankaty will replace the M/V Island Home, beginning with the 1:15 p.m. departure from Woods Hole.Passengers should expect delays throughout the day, according to the Steamship Authority.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No additional information was immediately available.
