NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Quick thinking and rapid response by the New Bedford Fire Department prevented major structural damage during a residential fire on November 1, 2026.
At approximately 5:41 p.m., crews were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 491 North Front Street, a three-family residential building. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke venting from the basement.
Due to Engine 8 being committed to a separate emergency call, Engine 9 stepped in as the first-due engine. Crews immediately stretched a hose line into the basement, locating and extinguishing a dryer fire before it could spread to the rest of the building.
While the fire was contained quickly, smoke had traveled throughout the structure. Firefighters spent time conducting ventilation operations and monitoring air quality to ensure the multi-family home was completely safe for residents to return.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and occupants were able to reoccupy their homes shortly after the scene was cleared. Officials noted that the building was equipped with working smoke alarms, which successfully alerted residents to the danger.
In the wake of the incident, the New Bedford Fire Department is reminding community members to regularly clean dryer lint traps and inspect exhaust vents to minimize the risk of preventable household fires.
