Firefighters Make “Great Stop” as Garage Fire Threatens Attleboro Home
The Attleboro Fire Department extinguished a heavily involved garage fire Tuesday morning, stopping the blaze from spreading into the attached residence and limiting the home to minimal smoke damage.
Just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25, the department received multiple calls reporting a structure fire on Burt Street.
When crews arrived, they found an attached garage fully engulfed in flames, along with a vehicle fire. The fire had consumed the garage and was extending toward the attached home. Firefighters also encountered live electrical wires sparking across the driveway, adding another serious hazard.
Crews immediately launched an aggressive attack on the fire while additional firefighters entered the residence to search for occupants and check for fire extension.
Firefighters knocked down the fire in approximately 20 minutes, stopping the blaze at the garage and preventing it from reaching the home’s living area. Three vehicles were damaged in the fire.
“This fire was already well involved when crews first arrived, and the live electrical wires added another element to an already dangerous situation,” District Chief Michael Maitland said. “Crews were able to stop the fire at the garage and keep the damage to the residence to a minimum. They made a great stop.”
After extinguishing the fire, crews remained at the scene to ventilate the residence, conduct overhaul operations and check for any hidden fire extension.
One Attleboro firefighter was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Two residents suffered minor burn injuries but declined transportation to a hospital.
National Grid responded to secure the electrical wires and terminate power to the structure. The Attleboro Building Department also responded.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Attleboro Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit.
The North Attleboro Fire Department provided mutual aid at the scene, while the Cumberland, Norton, Mansfield and Plainville fire departments provided station coverage.
Crews cleared the scene at approximately 11:40 a.m.
