The transformation of Bicentennial Park is entering its final stages, bringing the community one step closer to enjoying a revitalized space designed for families, children, and residents of all ages.
The Westport Recreation Department extends its sincere thanks to everyone for their patience as work continues. While the park remains officially closed for safety reasons, crews are making steady progress toward completing the project.
“We know everyone is excited to use the new playground,” Recreation officials said. “We’re asking residents to please respect the construction barriers and closures so the remaining work can be completed safely. Unfortunately, caution tape, construction signs, and barriers have repeatedly been removed, creating unnecessary safety concerns.”
Playground Almost Ready
The new playground is nearly complete. The rubberized safety surface has been installed and fully cured, and the swings are now in place. Before opening, the playground installer will conduct a final walkthrough with Town officials to ensure every piece of equipment meets safety standards and that any remaining adjustments are addressed.
More Improvements Still to Come
The project extends well beyond the playground itself. In partnership with the Westport Highway Department, additional improvements are planned, including:
- Installation of a paved walking path around the park and through the playground area.
- Grading and landscaping surrounding the playground, followed by new grass seeding.
- Relocation of the flagpole near the main entrance.
- Parking lot improvements, including the addition of accessible parking signage.
A new front fence and updated park signage will also be installed to create a more welcoming entrance.
Looking Ahead
The Town continues to invest in Bicentennial Park beyond the current construction.
Funding has already been secured to improve the basketball courts, with work expected to be completed later this year. Recreation officials are also planning the park’s final phase—renovations to the skate park—and will seek grant funding this winter and spring to help make those improvements possible.
A Park Built for the Community
When complete, Bicentennial Park will offer an improved destination for recreation, exercise, and community gathering for years to come.
