Arthur Calheta, 82, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, August 3, 2026.
Arthur was the beloved husband of the late Gisele L. (Breton) Calheta, with whom he shared 62 wonderful years of marriage. Born in Acushnet, he was the son of the late John and Leopoldina (Jesus) Calheta.
Arthur dedicated many years of service as a Patrolman with the City of New Bedford Water Department. Beyond his career, he became a cherished figure throughout the community for his extraordinary commitment to Whaling City Little League. For more than 50 years, he managed and coached youth baseball, impacting generations of young athletes. To countless children and their families, Arthur was far more than a coach—he was a mentor, encourager, and friend. He never hesitated to drive children to and from practices and games, ensuring every child had the opportunity to play.
Known for his kind heart and outgoing personality, Arthur had a remarkable ability to make friends wherever he went. He genuinely enjoyed talking with everyone he met and was an active member of the local CB Radio Club. He also proudly served the community by driving the Sheriff’s Department Command Unit van.
Arthur spent his entire life in the same family home, where he built a lifetime of treasured memories with family, friends, and neighbors. Family was the center of his world, and he found his greatest joy in spending time with his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He also shared a special bond with his faithful dog, Crocker, who was his constant companion.
One of Arthur’s happiest memories was a family trip to Disney World, a place that brought him immense joy. He often spoke of returning someday and dreamed of purchasing an RV so he and Gisele could travel together. Although that dream was never fulfilled during his lifetime, those who loved him find comfort in imagining Arthur and his beloved Gisele reunited, finally taking that long-awaited journey together.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Pamela Perry of Yarmouth and Tammie Pacheco of New Bedford; his cherished grandchildren, Nichole Abreu and her husband, Laurenco, of Florida, Robert Thomas Perry III and his partner, Sarah Lawrence, of New Bedford, and Ross Tyler Perry of Washington, D.C.; and his adored great-grandchildren, Savannah Duarte, Laurenco Abreu, and Hattie Gisele Perry, whose arrival is eagerly awaited.
Arthur’s kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family and community touched countless lives. He will be remembered for his warm smile, easy conversations, generous spirit, and the lasting difference he made in the lives of so many young athletes and their families. His legacy of compassion, service, and friendship will live on in all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
His funeral will be held on Monday, August 10, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. from the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish, 343 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
