An ordinary morning coffee run took a bizarre turn at a Dedham, Massachusetts Starbucks on Route 1, resulting in a police response over a matter of two cents.
According to local reports, a customer became upset after a worker did not return two cents in change following a transaction. The minor dispute highlighted a modern headache for cash transactions: the phasing out of penny production, which has left businesses navigating a transitional gray area by rounding up or down.
Rather than walking away from the fractional difference, the customer’s frustration escalated inside the shop. When staff suggested he take the matter up with company headquarters, he stood his ground.
Ultimately, the disagreement required law enforcement intervention. An officer arrived at the Providence Highway location shortly after 8:00 a.m. to help de-escalate the situation, advising the customer once again to contact corporate before escorting him from the premises.
It is a striking reminder of the growing pains we face as society shifts away from physical currency—and proof that even the smallest amounts of loose change can sometimes spark the most unexpected standoffs.
