For many residents in New Bedford, the United Fishermen’s Club at 639 Orchard Street has long been a staple for family milestones, community gatherings, and cultural events. However, a rocky transition and sudden leadership shake-up under new management have recently left community members—and customers with major events right around the corner—scrambling for answers.
Back in August, when a new administration took over the historic social club, they publicly reported a major hurdle: the previous administration allegedly left behind no event books or physical records. In response, club leadership took to social media to urge anyone with a previously scheduled event to stop by the club in person with physical receipts or confirmation messages to get their reservations reinstated.
While some patrons reported successfully working through the process, recent online reactions reveal a much more chaotic reality for others. Local residents have taken to the club’s Facebook page to voice severe frustration over communication breakdowns, abruptly disconnected phone lines, and last-minute closures.
Community member Mercedez Frakes commented online, “Just tried calling to book for early next month and it said number was out of service.”
Even more alarmingly, bride-to-be Rose Jackson shared the devastating news that her upcoming nuptials were caught in the crossfire, writing: “Yea was some to find out by this that y’all are closed and our wedding is there in a week with no one saying anything!!!”
For an organization built on decades of community trust, the administrative fallout and abrupt communication blackout have severely shaken local confidence. As affected families face the scramble to relocate major life events on short notice, the situation serves as a stark cautionary tale about the high stakes of sudden institutional transitions.
Have you been affected by the sudden closure of the club?
