The Healey-Driscoll Administration is investing $13 million in federal funding across Massachusetts to make roadways significantly safer for drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders.
Administered through the Office of Grants and Research (OGR) via grants from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the initiative targets everything from high-visibility police enforcement to community-level education.
Key Highlights of the Initiative
- Comprehensive Approach: Combines strategic traffic enforcement with public outreach, advanced police training, modern crash investigation tools, and targeted safety education for children, teens, and families.
- Child Passenger Safety: In addition to roadway enforcement, OGR has supplied 2,833 car seats and booster seats to 86 hospitals and family-serving organizations across the Commonwealth, backed by certified technician training through Baystate Health.
- Multi-Program Funding: The $13 million is distributed across four distinct streams, including the Municipal Road Safety Grant Program, State Agency Traffic Safety Grant Program, State Traffic Safety Information System Improvements Grant Program, and the Community Traffic Safety Grant Program.
By bringing together state agencies, local police departments, and community nonprofits, this comprehensive funding push aims to eliminate severe traffic injuries and fatalities, ensuring everyone across the Commonwealth gets to their destination safely.
