EAST BRIDGEWATER — Chief Michael Jenkins announced that a 55-year-old Brockton man has been arrested and charged following a joint investigation into child exploitation.
In September, East Bridgewater Police Detective Cecelia Cacciatore launched an inquiry after receiving a report of alleged inappropriate contact between a local juvenile and an adult male. Investigators determined that the suspect and the juvenile connected via social media applications and subsequently met in person multiple times, during which the juvenile was sexually assaulted.
The suspect was identified as Derek Gaughan of Brockton, a Level 3 sex offender.
On Thursday, Oct. 8, Detective Cacciatore secured and executed an arrest warrant for Gaughan alongside a search warrant for his residence. He was taken into custody without incident. Gaughan has been formally charged with Enticement of a Minor and Electronic Enticement of a Minor for Commercial Sexual Activity.
Because the alleged sexual assaults took place within Brockton, the Brockton Police Department pursued additional related charges. Gaughan was arraigned in Brockton District Court on Oct. 9, where a judge set bail at $100,000.
The East Bridgewater Police Department emphasizes its ongoing commitment to protecting children and combating exploitation and human trafficking. Authorities urge parents, caregivers, and community members to remain vigilant about the risks of online grooming and to report any safety concerns regarding children.
