Last week, a heartbreaking tragedy in Reading, Massachusetts, unfolded when a dedicated member of the local animal rescue community was found deceased in her home. Known for opening her heart and home to foster animals in need, her passing revealed an overwhelming community challenge: she left behind 84 cats.
Members of the MSPCA-Angell Law Enforcement and Community Outreach teams swiftly stepped in to help remove the cats from the residence, transporting them safely to MSPCA-Angell Adoption Centers in Boston and Methuen.
The Road to Recovery
Taking in 84 animals all at once places an unprecedented strain on shelter resources, veterinary teams, and dedicated volunteers. However, the immediate priority remains the health and well-being of every single cat.
According to shelter officials, the cats present varying medical needs. Each animal requiring treatment is receiving specialized veterinary care before being cleared for adoption. While some of the resilient felines may be ready to find new permanent homes as early as this week, others will require extended care and monitoring.
How You Can Help
The MSPCA-Angell team has expressed profound gratitude to the staff, volunteers, and community clinics working tirelessly around the clock to support these cats through this difficult transition.
For animal lovers looking to make a difference, there are two primary ways to support the mission right now:
- Consider Adoption: Shelters are currently at high capacity. Whether looking to welcome a cat from this specific intake or another animal waiting for a home, adopting helps alleviate the immense pressure on local rescue networks.
- Contribute Donations: Financial contributions directly fund the essential medical treatments, specialized care, daily food, and shelter resources required for these 84 cats and countless other animals in need.
Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased, her loved ones, and everyone in the local rescue community touched by this profound loss.
