Anthony Navarro Rodriguez, of New Bedford, died Sunday from injuries suffered in a Friday night collision involving a motorcycle and a car, officials said. His family is now raising funds to help cover funeral expenses and return his remains to Guatemala for burial.
The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the fatal crash, which happened at about 9:55 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Walnut Street and South Sixth Street.
New Bedford police and emergency medical crews responded after receiving 911 calls reporting a collision between a motorcycle and a car. First responders found Rodriguez, 21, on the ground with significant injuries.
Rodriguez was transported to a local hospital before being flown by Med Flight for treatment of life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead Sunday, officials said.
A Saturn sedan involved in the crash remained at the scene. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The driver’s name has not been released.
Officials have not released details about what caused the crash. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
Rodriguez’s death has left his family grieving as they face the loss of a young loved one and the immediate costs associated with his funeral.
According to a fundraiser organized to support the family, donations will help pay for Rodriguez’s funeral and transportation of his remains to Guatemala, where his family hopes he can be buried alongside his grandfather.
“Being able to honor him in this way means so much to the people who love him,” the fundraiser states.
The family said they are struggling to cope with the heartbreaking loss and are asking for support during this difficult time. Any contribution, regardless of the amount, can help with the funeral and burial expenses, organizers said.
