A Megabucks ticket sold in Massachusetts for Monday, September 7’s drawing has won a record-breaking $29.71 million jackpot, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery.
The winning ticket was sold at King Mart, 494 Westfield Rd. in Holyoke. The winning numbers were 21, 28, 31, 34, 40 and 44.
The lucky ticket holder has one year to claim the prize.
The $29.71 million jackpot eclipses the previous record for the largest jackpot in Megabucks history. That record was set in the October 16, 1985, drawing, when a $21.7 million jackpot was divided among eight winning tickets. At the time, it ranked as the third-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.
Monday’s win also surpasses the previous record for the largest Megabucks jackpot won on a single ticket. That prize totaled $16.35 million and was won in the September 10, 2022, drawing by a ticket sold in Ware.
The original Megabucks game debuted in November 1982 and has undergone several changes over the years. Most recently, in November 2023, the lottery reduced the number field from 49 numbers to 44, improving the odds of winning across all prize tiers.
Now, more than four decades after Megabucks launched, Massachusetts has a new jackpot record—and one lucky ticket holder is holding the biggest prize in the game’s history. The largest single-ticket lottery winner in Massachusetts history is Mavis Wanczyk of Chicopee, who won a historic $758.7 million Powerball jackpot in August 2017.
