The Dartmouth Fire Department had a busy Fourth of July evening, responding to multiple emergency incidents throughout the district.
At 10:53 p.m., Dartmouth Fire District 1 (DFD1) was dispatched to a reported lightning strike on Meadow Shores Drive. Due to the ongoing closure of the Padanaram Bridge, Engine 3—temporarily stationed on the west side of the causeway—responded immediately, along with Engines 1 and 2 and Tower 1 from headquarters.
Upon arrival, crews found a residential structure with smoke on multiple levels. Mutual aid from Dartmouth Fire District 3 (DFD3) was requested to provide coverage for the east side of the district while DFD1 crews were committed to the fire scene.
Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of our firefighters, the fire was contained to the kitchen area, preventing further extension and limiting damage to the home.
While crews remained on scene, Engine 1 was re-dispatched to assist EMS personnel with a cardiac arrest call. We sincerely thank Dartmouth Fire District 3 for their assistance and continued partnership.
As we witnessed last night, the closure of the Padanaram Bridge affects more than just residents on the west side of the district—it impacts the entire community. When emergency apparatus cannot move freely across the causeway, delays in emergency response are unavoidable.
The events of the evening underscored the foresight of our fire officers, whose planning and strategic placement of apparatus during the holiday bridge closure helped ensure the fastest possible response despite these challenges.
