After more than 35 years at Roger Williams Park Zoo, African elephants Alice, Ginny and Kate will move to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee in late 2027 as part of the Zoo’s long-term commitment to their care.
The decision follows an extensive evaluation process focused on the elephants’ needs as they enter their senior years. Zoo officials said they wanted to make plans while all three elephants are healthy and together, ensuring they can continue to live as a group and enjoy the companionship of other elephants throughout their lives.
The Elephant Sanctuary was selected after a comprehensive review of animal care, veterinary services, habitat, social opportunities and long-term planning. The Zoo also consulted the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ African Elephant Species Survival Plan, which recommended facilities capable of keeping the trio together for life, maintaining them in a herd environment and providing ample outdoor access.
Located in Tennessee, The Elephant Sanctuary specializes in caring for aging elephants and offers expansive natural habitats, experienced caregivers and opportunities for greater social interaction with other elephants.
Zoo leaders said the move reflects their responsibility to provide the best possible quality of life for Alice, Ginny and Kate as they age. The Sanctuary’s leadership said it is honored to welcome the elephants and provide them with lifelong care in a setting that emphasizes choice, companionship and natural behaviors.
