Turn Back the Clock: Remember Zayre?

There was a time when a trip to Zayre was a weekend tradition. Headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts, Zayre grew into one of America’s largest discount department store chains, offering everything from clothing and toys to housewares at bargain prices. For many families, it was the place to shop long before Walmart became a household name. I vividly recall visiting Zayre in the Dartmouth Mall after a matinee viewing of Star Wars and begging my Mom to buy me some action figures! We went home with Darth Vader, R2D2, C3pO and a Stormtrooper; yes I still have them!

Founded in 1956, Zayre expanded at an incredible pace. By the 1970s, hundreds of stores dotted the Northeast, South, and Midwest, becoming a familiar sight in shopping centers across the country. Its bright blue-and-red logo and bustling aisles remain fond memories for generations of shoppers.

In 1976, Zayre’s leadership saw a new opportunity emerging in retail. They launched a small off-price fashion chain called TJ Maxx, hoping to attract shoppers looking for designer brands at discounted prices. It seemed like just another experiment at the time—but it would ultimately change the company’s future.

As the late 1970s and 1980s unfolded, Zayre’s traditional department stores faced mounting pressure from fast-growing competitors like Walmart and Target. Meanwhile, TJ Maxx was thriving. More attention, investment, and resources flowed toward the fast-growing off-price concept, while the original Zayre stores gradually lost momentum.

The final chapter came in 1988, when Zayre sold its struggling discount store division to Ames Department Stores. Within just a couple of years, the familiar Zayre name disappeared from America’s retail landscape, closing the book on a chain that had once seemed unstoppable.

Although the Zayre stores are gone, their story didn’t truly end. In 1987, the company reorganized its successful specialty retail businesses into The TJX Companies. As the original Zayre chain faded away, TJ Maxx continued to flourish, eventually joined by Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, Homesense, and other brands.

Today, The TJX Companies is one of the world’s largest off-price retailers—a remarkable legacy that traces directly back to Zayre. While the blue-and-red storefronts have long since vanished, every bargain found at TJ Maxx is a reminder of the department store empire that started it all.
