The Attleboro Fire Department rescued a seriously injured 19-year-old driver Monday morning after his vehicle crashed into a utility pole on West Street near Berwick Road.

At approximately 8:35 a.m. on Aug. 17, Attleboro firefighters and paramedics responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a utility pole. Upon arrival, crews found the vehicle heavily damaged, with its sole occupant trapped inside.

Firefighters immediately began a complex extrication operation using hydraulic cutting and rescue tools. At the same time, paramedics provided advanced medical care, including IV therapy and medications, inside and around the damaged vehicle.

After approximately 38 minutes, crews successfully freed the driver. He was transported by Attleboro Fire Department paramedics to Rhode Island Hospital with injuries believed to be life-threatening.

“This was a complex call that required our firefighters and paramedics to work simultaneously in a very confined and difficult environment,” District Chief Maitland said. “Our crews had to balance a difficult extrication with the need to provide immediate medical care. Everyone worked carefully and efficiently to free the patient as quickly as possible while minimizing the risk of further injury.”

Fire crews remained at the scene until approximately 9:40 a.m. The scene was then turned over to the Attleboro Police Department, which is investigating the cause of the crash.
