UMass Dartmouth freshman football player Marvins Antoine, 18, of Boston, was killed after being stabbed early Saturday morning in Providence, Rhode Island, police said.
Antoine was a 5-foot-10, 180-pound running back from Boston who attended Durfee High School in Fall River. He had only recently started college and had not appeared in any of UMass Dartmouth’s first three football games this season. Antoine was a standout athlete at both Durfee and Atlantis Charter, excelling in basketball and as a running back in football.
Providence police said officers responded to the Wendy’s parking lot on Charles Street at approximately 12:30 a.m. Saturday, September 19, following a report of a stabbing.
Antoine and fellow UMass Dartmouth football player Kensley Macean, 19, were found suffering from stab wounds. Antoine suffered wounds to the chest and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Macean suffered injuries to his head and neck and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Police said the stabbing followed an altercation at Mezzo Lounge in Providence. A suspect is currently in custody, police said.
UMass Dartmouth confirmed Antoine’s death in a statement:
“We are heartbroken to share that first-year student and football team member Marvins Antoine passed away this morning following an incident in Providence, Rhode Island. Our thoughts are with Marvins’ family, friends, classmates, and teammates.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
