If you thought morning coffee was the only way to wake up on a Sunday, one driver in Falmouth just proved there’s a much more dramatic—and aquatic—alternative.
On Sunday morning around 6:50 a.m., the Falmouth Police Department responded to a report of a Mazda CX-5 taking an unprompted dip off Clinton Avenue Beach, right in front of the Falmouth Yacht Club.
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle skipped the stop sign at the intersection of Falmouth Heights Road and Grand Avenue, ploughed straight through a sidewalk guardrail, and took a splash landing into the ocean.
When officers arrived, they found the Mazda floating gracefully in shallow water with extensive front-end damage—but no driver in sight. An extensive area search quickly uncovered evidence of an attempted break-in at the nearby yacht club, along with a trail of discarded property. By 8:30 a.m., police located the suspected operator, a 23-year-old male from Florida, lounging in a nearby hotel room at the Tides Hotel.
The driver was transported to Falmouth Hospital in stable condition, and a heavy-duty tow truck managed to haul the damp Mazda back onto dry land with zero signs of environmental harm. While criminal charges are pending completion of the investigation, the best news of all remains clear: despite a wild sequence of events that reads like a movie script, no one was seriously injured.
