A 25-year-old motorcyclist is in critical condition following a severe early-morning crash on Route 28 in West Yarmouth.
The incident unfolded shortly before 12:30 AM on Saturday near the Parker’s River Bridge and Neptune Lane. According to Yarmouth Police, the stretch of roadway had recently been reduced to a single lane due to ongoing construction, regulated by a portable traffic signal and a series of jersey barriers.
First responders arrived to find the rider suffering from severe injuries, with the motorcycle tossed into roadside bushes. Yarmouth firefighters administered life-saving measures at the scene before rushing the victim to Cape Cod Gateway Airport. From there, a Boston MedFlight helicopter airlifted the patient to an off-Cape trauma center in Rhode Island.
Investigators believe the southbound motorcycle failed to stop at a red traffic light, slamming directly into a work-zone jersey barrier and throwing the operator from the bike. Police also noted that the rider was operating without a valid driver’s license.
Route 28 was temporarily shut down as the Yarmouth Police Crash Reconstruction Unit processed the scene. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the crash to contact the department directly at 508-775-0445.
