FALL RIVER, Mass. — Local emergency services successfully managed a high-risk motor vehicle accident on Brayton Ave earlier today after a car crashed into a building, leaving individuals trapped and presenting severe electrical hazards.
The incident unfolded when Fall River Police dispatched units to the scene following reports of a vehicle colliding with a structure with injuries. Shift Commander Lieutenant Blackburn, operating Fall River EMS Squad 11, was nearby and arrived within seconds. Lt. Blackburn immediately established EMS command, requested backup, and initiated critical life-saving care for a patient pinned beneath the vehicle—acting as the sole medical and fire personnel on scene for several minutes before additional units arrived.
Coordinated Rescue Operations and Hazards
Fire department personnel deployed extensive extrication measures, working for approximately 30 to 40 minutes to free the patient trapped under the vehicle.
The operation grew increasingly dangerous when live wires with active sparks began emitting from both the house and the car. National Grid was immediately called to shut off power to the area, prompting EMS command to temporarily pull all first responders out of the structure to ensure their safety.
Transport and Unit Coordination
Three separate medic units responded to the scene:
- Rhode Island Hospital Trauma Center: One patient was transported with a driver and two paramedics attending in the back of the ambulance.
- Local Hospitals: Two additional patients were transported for further medical evaluation. The extent of their injuries remains unknown at this time.
A comprehensive multi-agency response was deployed, featuring personnel and equipment from:
- Fall River EMS: Squad 11, Squad 12, Medic 2, Medic 3, and Medic 6
- Fall River Fire Department: Car 3 (establishing Fire command), Engine 2, Engine 4, Ladder 2, Heavy Rescue 1, and the Tech Rescue truck
- Partner Agencies: Fall River Police Department and National Grid
