The political fallout from the weekend motor vehicle crash in New Bedford deepened on Monday as former Massachusetts lieutenant governor candidate Shawn Oliver made his initial court appearance. Following his sudden decision to suspend his campaign, newly released police reports and court proceedings have shed further light on the charges facing the local city councilor, with additional reporting from Spectrum News and CBS.
Court Appearance and Charges
Oliver appeared briefly in New Bedford District Court on Monday morning, just a day after his arrest. During the proceeding, a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
He is facing multiple charges stemming from the weekend incident, including:
- Operating under the influence of liquor
- Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
- Marked lanes violation
- Speeding
Release Conditions and Next Steps
The judge released Oliver on personal recognizance, with the strict condition that his status can be revoked if he is arrested on any new charges. Additionally, Oliver’s driver’s license was suspended following the crash.
Both Oliver and his defense attorney, John Hendrie, declined to answer questions from reporters as they left the courthouse. Oliver is scheduled to return to court for his next hearing on November 16.
