On October 9, 2026, 22-year-old Ryan Hanafin was formally charged with murder and multiple firearm-related offenses following the shooting death of his 49-year-old mother, Andria Hanafin, in Reading, Massachusetts.
The tragedy came to light shortly after midnight on October 8, when Andria’s husband returned home from work and discovered her fatally shot inside the family kitchen. Unaware of the horrific event, the couple’s 13-year-old youngest son was asleep upstairs in the house at the time.
Investigation & Arrest
Ryan Hanafin fled the state following the shooting and was captured by the Vermont State Police on October 8. He subsequently waived extradition, allowing authorities to bring him back to Massachusetts to face serious criminal charges. No conviction has been announced at this time.
New court documents and police reports reveal mounting tension within the household prior to the incident. Investigators note that Andria and her eldest son had recently argued over employment and the numerous rescued cats living inside the home. According to reports, Andria—a compassionate veterinary technician and well-known cat foster who cared deeply for animals—had expressed that she wanted her son to move out. Furthermore, disturbing details emerged indicating that one of Ryan’s friends received Snapchat messages in which Ryan allegedly joked about killing his mother. Credit the VT Digger for that tidbit.
A Community in Mourning
Authorities executing search warrants in the aftermath also recovered numerous firearms from Ryan’s bedroom.
The mother of three is being remembered by friends and loved ones as a deeply caring, community-minded woman whose life revolved around her family and her passion for animals. What unfolded inside that home has left an entire family devastated, while local investigators continue examining the tragic circumstances surrounding her death.
