NEW BEDFORD, MA — After more than a decade of serving up craft cocktails, particularly their bloody mary’s;seafood staples, and its famous Lobster Rolls, Quahog Republic Whaler’s Tavern at 24 N. Water St. is officially closing its doors.
The story was first broken by SouthCoast Today. Seeking further details, we personally reached out directly to the restaurant for confirmation. Shortly after our inquiry, the business officially confirmed the news on their Facebook page, announcing that their final day of operation will be Monday (Columbus Day).
For local patrons, the news marks a heartbreaking loss for the historic district. Over the years, Whaler’s Tavern became a beloved downtown sanctuary—a spot where locals and visitors alike gathered to share countless memorable meals, drinks, and lively conversations amidst the historic 1790s brick-and-cobblestone setting.
The closure underscores a growing, painful strain felt across the downtown business community. Several local owners, including the team at Shimmer, share that ongoing and seemingly endless construction projects have significantly disrupted daily foot traffic, eaten up critical parking spots, and crushed local sales.
Staff at Whaler’s Tavern were originally notified of the impending closure on September 29, giving them two weeks’ notice before the doors close for good. While the tavern will have a limited menu throughout its final weekend, regular patrons still have a few days left to stop in, say goodbye, and toast to a decade of fond memories before Monday’s final farewell.
