An 18-year-old Brockton man lost his life early Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Route 44 in Raynham, authorities confirmed.
The victim was identified by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office as Jean Charles.
According to police, emergency responders were dispatched to the area of 430 New State Highway around 6:15 a.m. following reports of a pedestrian crash. Investigators determined that Charles was crossing the street when he was hit by a westbound 2017 Honda CR-V driven by a 37-year-old Taunton man.
Charles, who worked at the nearby Chipotle restaurant on New State Highway, was reportedly crossing the roadway to get coffee at a nearby Dunkin’ prior to his shift. He was rushed to a local hospital with severe injuries but was pronounced dead a short time later.
In a statement following the tragedy, Chipotle Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Laurie Schalow expressed condolences on behalf of the company:
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident involving one of our New State Highway crew members in Raynham, Massachusetts. Our thoughts are with their family, friends, and fellow restaurant team members during this difficult time.”
The driver of the SUV remained at the scene following the collision. Both the driver and a passenger were transported by Brewster Ambulance to Morton Hospital in Taunton for evaluation.
The fatal crash remains under active investigation by the Raynham Police Department alongside the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. No charges or further details have been released at this time.
