FALL RIVER, Mass. — A New Bedford man convicted of first-degree murder is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday morning at Fall River Superior Court.
The Bristol County District Attorney’s office announced that 23-year-old John Geovanni Pires Monteiro Macedo was found guilty by a jury on October 1 of first-degree murder by deliberate premeditation and related firearms offenses.
The charges stem from the August 2023 murder of 27-year-old Amarito Fernandes in New Bedford. Evidence presented during the trial showed that Macedo approached a vehicle parked on County Street in which Fernandes was sitting and fired multiple shots as the victim attempted to flee.
Fernandes was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, where he was pronounced dead.
Macedo’s sentencing proceeding is set to begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
